Learn about the angels of heaven. What are they?
Angels in heaven? Yes, but perhaps not what you think, or even imagined angels to be. Read on and learn the truth about divine messengers who speak to us in spirit.

Many wonder about angels and heaven. Heaven is a word used by religion to describe a peaceful place somewhere outside of yourself. It is hoped by many that when they die, they will be good enough to reside in heaven with the angels. But unfortunately, religion has done a disservice to many, for they do not understand angels or heaven.

Heaven, in the Bible, is translated from the Greek word for sky (ouranos), which conveys the idea of elevation. Heaven is therefore an elevated place, but not in the literal sense. In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus is cited as saying, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you." Roughly interpreted, the higher place, or spirit, is within you and not outside of you somewhere.






Now that we have understood heaven to mean spirit, let's examine the word "angel." Angels are messengers, for the word originated from the Greek term for messenger, angelos. In the Bible, we can read of angels bringing messages to various people. Yet, angels are not some fluffy, soft being with wings and halo, but spirits who bring messages from the higher place, heaven. Heaven is the spirit, or energy, in which we all exist.

Angels in heaven are messengers in spirit, and as each of us are spirits within the Spirit, angels communicate with us often, though we may be unaware. Sure, there are angel sightings that occur where people may witness an angel as a benevolant, mysterious stranger, or even a powerful light being that appears out of thin air to deliver a message, but most angels are not seen. They are heard. Messengers in spirit, deliver thoughts to us for direction, to spark ideas, to warn, and to encourage. These are the angels of heaven who surround us, uninvasively overlooking our lives. Their presence may be felt as a tingling, or a breath of air, and even have been experienced as pure love enveloping a person. Angels speaking to us from the heavens will be peaceful, often joyful, and always loving. A great example of angels at work in heaven is the passage of Jacob's ladder:
"He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, 'I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants.'
'Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

'Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.'

Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, 'Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.'

He was afraid and said, 'How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.'" Genesis 28:12-17

Your physical body, being made from the dust of the ground, is the Earth in this parable. Heaven represents the spirit. Mankind is made up of both. Jacob realized that the house of god, the gate of heaven was within mankind. His connection with his Divine source was not found far away, but within himself, (as well as within you, and within everyone). The angels were ascending and descending in spirit (heaven) and speaking to mankind from within. This is what the dream pictured for Jacob. Angels speak to us within our being, and Jesus referenced this when he said to Nathanael:

"You shall see heaven opened, and the angels of divinity ascending and descending upon the Son of man." John 1:51

Jesus demonstrated how this should be, for he knew things and did things that many were surprised to see and hear. He did so by being in-tune with the angels in spirit...heaven. By listening to your angels who are speaking to your heaven (or higher place - your spirit), you too will also receive higher direction and revelation from the Divine which is Spirit. You may call this energy god.

There is no true separation from your source, the Spirit, heaven, or angels, unless one allows their self to mentally disconnect by ignoring the inner voice. And if one disconnects and seems lost, he or she only need remember that the angels of heaven are in their midst, ever speaking, ever caring, and ever listening.

Angels: Heirarchy

Angel heirarchy: Classes of angels as traditionally taught.

Angel heirarchy, the order of the classes of angels by rank, has been debated clear back to the beginnings of christianity. However, the Hebrew heirarchy of angels has been established for millennia. It seems that the angel choirs will vary depending upon what religious view one subscribes to, as there are discrepancies between which classes of angels belong to which choirs, as well as different names for what are most likely the same types of angels. The following angel heirarchies will help in sorting out the traditional view of angel class and rank.

Hebrew Angel Heirarchy
First let us mention that traditional Hebrew beliefs teach the existence of seven heavens, each guarded by various angels. The seven heavens are:

Shamayim
Raqua
Shehaqim
Machonon
Mathey
Zubul
Araboth

The Hebrew ranking of angels from highest to lowest are:

Hayyoth
Ophanim
Erelim
Hasmalim
Elohim
Bene Elohim
Cherubim
Issim

Christian Angel Heirarchy
As previously mentioned, the arguments within the christian church by theologians regarding angel heirarchy began with the earliest theologians of the then newly formed religion. The bible gives angel types, but no mention of angel heirarchies or rank. The following are the various classes of angels mentioned without classification: angels, archangels , principalities, powers, dominions, virtues, thrones, cherubim and seraphim. However, over a period of time, many church leaders such as St. Thomas Aquinas, began eventually subscribing to the pseudodionysian scheme of angel heirarchy. This ranking of angels called choirs, breaks them into three hierarchies with three orders under each heirachy:

First Heirarchy (Highest)
Seraphim - first order (those who see most clearly)
Cherubim - second order (fullness of knowledge)
Thrones - third order (contemplate divine justice)

Second Heirarchy (Middle)
Dominations - fourth order (providence is enacted through them)
Virtues - fifth order (movement of the heavenly bodies)
Powers - sixth order (precise and preserved enactment)

Third Heirarchy (Lowest)
Principalities - seventh order (welfare of human affairs as a whole)
Archangels - eighth order (sharing of higher things to all of mankind)
Angels - ninth order (individual affairs of mankind)

Islam Angel Heirarchy
The highest ranking angel mentioned in the Koran is identified with the Spirit, who is made from God's light, and is the Divine Command and chief of the Kerubim (cherubim). He has eight forms who bear the throne of God, while Cherubim are the axis of creation. All angels are created from him, thus archangels and angels preside over the Universe for him. There are four archangels (another name used for Kerubim) named: Israfil, Jibril (Gabriel), Azrael (Izrail) and Michael. Two other angels are mentioned by name: Munkar and Nakir, who visit graves of those who recently departed. Ridwan, are angels in charge of heaven, while kiramu'l katiban are angels who accompany every person and record their lives (each person has two of them; one on each side of the person).

Final Thoughts on Angel Heirarchy
There are truly so many more ideas concernings angels and their ranking, that it is virtually impossible to make much sense of it all. These ideas of heirarchy have been researched over and over, and one thing is clear: rank and class of angels have been evolving through religion and mythology for thousands of years. It is best to know this, and not put much stock into any of the schemes of angel heirarchy, for there has to be error with so many conflicting arrangements of celestial beings. It makes one wonder if attempts were made to make more out of of ancient writings than what was intended by the authors, when theologians attempted to discern and assign rank. You will see that so many orders of angels are equated with other angels of different names (but similar); yet there does not seem to be one heirarchy that fits all of the beliefs regarding these angelic beings. In other words, attempts at trying to resolve the heirarchy confusion is futile.

Fallen Angels

What are Fallen Angels?
There are those who believe and teach that fallen angels rule the earth as angelic principalities
and powers. They claim that this spiritual conflict is largely unseen, with heavenly, Holy angels
combating the fallen angels who are under the charge of Satan (or Lucifer). They teach that fallen
angels are indeed demons, who roam the Earth looking to inflict harm upon mankind. They have
even given them names (See: Fallen Angel Names). Fundamentalist Christians teach that fallen
angels will be fully unloosed upon the Earth and permitted by God to wreak the worst possible in
order for mankind to repent and accept Jesus as savior. Those who accept Christ, they claim, will
be saved from such wrath, including the eventual eternal punishment waged by God against Satan,
his fallen angels, and any unrepentant humans.

Such false teachings about fallen angels, demons, devils, Satan, Lucifer and the like have been put
together into such a story-line, by comparing ancient manuscripts primarily found within the Old and
New Testaments. Other ancient writings have also been scoured to fill in gaps, such as 1 Enoch,
and Jubilees. Such teachings though, have created a great misunderstanding concerning fallen
angels, and even angels in general (To better understand angels, please take a moment and read
about them here: Angels). Angels are messengers, and fallen angels are messengers whose
message is unenlightened. Allow me to explain. When one speaks spiritual truth, or better yet,
expresses love to another, this is an enlightened message. Angels, ministering spirits, speak
messages of encouragement and guidance, always given with love being the motivator.

Fallen angels are lost spirits.
In contrast, fallen angels are messengers whose message does not come from a heart of love, but
is truly an expression of fear. To understand this, we must first understand that negative entities, or
ghosts, are earthbound spirits of humans. These spirits interact with those of us in bodies,
sometimes speaking their messages, or rather fears to us. A spirit remains here with the living for
numerous reasons. Perhaps the person has unfinished business, or maybe they feel compelled to
deliver a message to someone. For whatever reason a disembodied spirit remains attached to this
realm, ultimately it is due to fear. This fear paralyzes the person, and is a state of mental anguish -
hell. Imagine receiving a message from someone in an unstable state of mind. Would you expect it
to be enlightening?

The word "fallen" simply indicates one's position. Heaven is another word for Spirit, and it conveys
the idea of higher elevation - a higher place, if you will. When we are at peace, and living our lives
through love and truth, we are indeed in a higher position. Upon death of the physical body, the
spirit is free and normally gravitates toward the light, and continues the life-journey toward the higher
position. Why the light? The light is a cleansing process, of which the spirit receives a life-review,
and eventually deals with issues created during time spent interacting in the physical plane. Spirits
will interact with the living, observing, guiding, and bringing direction to those in physical bodies
from time to time. They are angels, caring about the whole of mankind and its elevation unto
knowing truth and peace. What truth, you say? The truth that we are connected - one. That we are
eternal spirits, and there is no death, no punishment, or loss. Such ideas are illusionary, created by
living our lives externally within physical bodies.

However, if a spirit decides to not enter into the light and receive the mental cleaning, it is because
of fear. Maybe fear of loss, fear of the unknown, fear of punishment, guilt, shame, doubt, worry, or
whatever; all of these are forms of fear. A spirit who decides to remain behind is not able to "rise
up" out of their condition easily. The ascension, or resurrection of the mind cannot occur, for it is
bound to the earthly state for a season. So, the restless spirit is alone, afraid, and quite attached to
the physical world it felt so comfortable with. And so, fallen angels have missed their opportunity to
be whole, cleansed by love, truth, and a new understanding. In a sense, most human beings are
indeed fallen angels, for we are spirits having an earthly experience, but many of us are lost to the
truth of who we really are.

The condition of such fallen angels are temporary, for the whole of Divinity is ever-growing, always
expanding, progressing, and essentially being freed from false beliefs, namely fear. It is love that
frees the fallen angels, and it is love that will eventually remove all fear.

Below is a list of passages found within ancient manuscripts that are used to promote fearful, thus
false ideas concerning angels. By taking such passages literally, they can be used to create fear in
the minds of those who choose to believe such things. Many of these are to be understood
spiritually in parabolic fashion, especially the sayings of Jesus found within the four gospels, and
Revelation a book of symbolism.

Angels in Dreams!

Angels in Dreams – Dream Angels
Many wonder about angels and dreams, especially after they have a dream where a
messenger, that is often perceived afterward to be an angel, appears. Sometimes,
angels in dreams are immediately recognized as being angelic, due to experiences of
bright light, warmth, peace and intense love. Angels in dreams, however, may not be
easily recognized as such, due to their appearance in human form, such as a man,
woman, child, a deceased friend or relative. It is only important to know that angels within
dreams may appear in any form imaginable, but always bring a message of some sort.
You may remember that the Bible mentions
that Jacob was visited by an angel within his
dreams (Old Testament), while Joseph (New
Testament) also had an angel visitation while
dreaming.

As our understanding of angel visitations can
be primarily traced back to Judaism and
Christianity, it is interesting to understand that
angels in dreams are therefore found within
each religion's ancient writings.



You may be surprised to know that many people report angels appearing to them within
their dreams. It could be possible that during the dream state we are more relaxed and
open to communication by angels, as our analytical left brain is now more relaxed, while
the expressive (and often suppressed while awake) right brain is vibrant and interactive.
This could also mean that some angels within dreams are produced by our minds for
some unforeseen need.

Though angels in dreams may imply that entities come and speak to us, it is also possible
that we are able to produce the entity within our mind in order to speak to ourselves.
Sometimes the core of our being is crying out, telling us to listen, and we have closed it off
being externally focused on daily events taking place around us. Yet, within us is the heart
of our existence, a true loving guide through life; for it is who you really are. Often, we lose
sight of our true self and need a messenger to speak to us. That messenger may be
another spirit, or even our own higher consciousness working to awaken us to the path of
truth.

It really doesn't matter if angels in our dreams originate from within us, or from what is
perceived to be an external messenger; for we are all connected and one Spirit. What is
important is the message. If it comes upon the wings of love and peace, then receive it. If
it is a message of fear, then examine it. If a dream is illogical, it may have more of a
metaphoric interpretation. We must remember that the wide cultural interest in angels,
especially the various religious interpretations, has produced many fantastic images for
our unconscious mind to use as an illustration within our dreams. What does the
illustration mean? What is the message and what can I learn from it?

Hear Angels

Hear Angels? Some may want to hear angels, while others wonder if we can hear
angels at all. In this short article, I'll attempt to answer both questions.

Throughout history, various religions have taught that angels can be perceived by the five
senses. Such an experience of perceiving angels is known as "angelophany."

Appearances of angels to mankind has been described in many different ways. So to
hear angels is really only one way which angels may be experienced.
The meaning of the word "angel" is
"messenger." In the Bible, an angel simply
denotes a person who brings a message,
whether with, or without a physical body. It is
no surprise then, that for many centuries the
description of angels has varied and even
been debated by religions. Angels have been
seen within dreams and visions, often
described as looking human in appearance.
Sometimes angels have been described as
having wings, but often this was simply a way
to insure we understand that the messenger
was from a higher place, namely spirit.
Angels, or spirit messengers, speak to us through thoughts. Often, we do not recognize
their thoughts, for we deem them to be from ourselves. Within every person occurs a
wonderful thing: higher messages of truth are resonating within the heart (or center) of
one's being. Sometimes, we do not recognize this inner voice, but choose to ignore it by
following what our head is telling us is going on outside of ourselves.

To hear angels better, or if you wonder, "How can I hear angels?" you must first learn
to meditate which means to quiet the mind. Our mind races with thoughts of daily
activities, being very busy. Meditation allows a person to relax, calm down and work to
silence the mundane thoughts that permeate our cranium. With practice, relaxation of the
mind and body can be achieved. By meditating, we disconnect from receiving information
externally. This is the state one wants to get to in order to listen to the deepest part of our
being, Spirit.

As all of us are living lives accompanied by spirits, it is not a matter of if we can hear, but
more a matter of what will we hear from such messengers. Spirits watch over our lives
and provide guidance and direction, much like a control tower does to an airplane. Do
you want to receive the message? Allow me to note that fear will not allow one to open up
to the messages coming from spirits. Fear is always false, linked to the past and comes
from focusing our lives on external things. By quieting the mind, we should somewhat be
silencing any fears. Fear must be overcome to be able to listen better internally.

Angels, being enlightened spirit messengers, will share thoughts of truth expressed with
feelings of love, joy and peace. So there is nothing to fear. In addition to sharing
messages that enable us to understand truth, one may hear angels expressing a direction
for his or her life. Often, our greatest desires are really just our life plan being revealed, or
more likely reiterated to us, in order to help us stay the course. One might say that to hear
angels brings enlightenment - a revealing of what the individual needs to know. And
knowing is better than believing, for knowledge is powerful.

Be encouraged that you can hear angels. It's not something that's impossible, for you are
hearing them already. One simply needs to discern the voice of spirits from the thoughts
we create on our own. The path to knowledge (and to hear angels) is never outside of
one's self, but always found within.

History of Angels

The word angels is derived from the Greek word angelos, which means messenger. Malakh, the Hebrew word for angel, also means messenger, and both words nicely coincide with the Persian word for angel, angaros, similarly meaning a courier.

The word "angel" can commonly be used to describe anyone who brings a message to another, whether a human being or a spirit. However, within some religions, angels are spirit messengers who bring messages of truth to aid mankind, while conversely, fallen angels bring forth messages of untruth to lead people astray and wreak havoc on Earth.
Angels are then traditionally believed to be supernatural beings who act as mediators between man and god. It is taught that angels have authority over the natural world, being organized into classes or heirarchies.

The origin of angels in history is quite complicated to figure out, due to angels or similar spirit beings being found within many cultures around the globe.

Angels are found within three key religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Yet, angels, or divine helpers, were also found within Sumerian, Babylonian, Persian, Egyptian and Greek writings, as well, and played a major influence upon the ideas regarding angels within the key religions themselves. For example, it is well known that ancient Sumerian texts pre-dated the Hebrew book of Genesis, including the idea of the existence of angels. The Hebrew beliefs regarding angels were similarly shared with Christianity, and both Judaism's and Christianity's teachings of angels inspired the Islam beliefs concerning angels.

Though maybe called different names, benevolant spirit beings quite similar to angels can also be found within other religions, mythologies, and lore. Hinduism has avatars, Buddhism has devas and bodhisattvas, the Greeks wrote about daimons, and other spirit beings similar to angels, such as guardian spirits and spirit guides, have been taught by tribal cultures. All of these have similar function as helpful spirit messengers, or angels.

Today, many people believe in demons and that they are fallen angels. This teaching originated in the Hebrew text of Isaiah about Lucifer being cast out of heaven with one third of the angels following him to the Earth. When the text was written, Lucifer actually referred to a Babylonian king, but later Christian, albeit poetic, interpretation of the same text changed Lucifer into Satan, commonly believed by many now to be the "devil."

A common description sometimes given of angels is that they are "beings of light," which are sometimes described as "fearful to behold" due to their tall stature, purity, and sheer power. Some will also describe angels as having wings and maybe even halos. Yet, the western idea of wings and halos originated through ancient religions and mythology. Images of angels looking like human beings, but with wings, were an ancient idea that illustrated benevolant spirit beings as coming from a "higher place" or the "heavens." Wings were an easy way to convey the idea of angels crossing back and forth (or even up and down) from the spirit world to Earth and then back again. Many ancient gods were often depicted as birds or as having wings (think Egyptian, for example). By the fourth century (AD), angels were widely perceived as having wings within western cultures, while wings were virtually non-existent within the Eastern religions. Many ancient cultures had placed wings upon their deities, creatures and heroes, so it was natural for Christian artists to look to pagan cultures for inspiration. Christian artisans were inspired to add wings to angels by looking at Greek art. Muslim artists looked to Persian renderings as their inspiration for wings upon angels. During this same time, Christian painters also borrowed the idea of the halo from the Greeks and Romans who had used them prior. Today, most people with common sense can easily recognize that angels with wings and halos were an addition into religious art after much debate and eventual approval by the Roman Council of Nicaea after 325 AD.

However, many times in the bible, angels appear to be men and are described as such from Genesis (e.g. when Jacob wrestles an angel) to Revelation (e.g. the letters to each of the churches are addressed to the pastors, or angels of each church). Even the name given to the archangel Gabriel means, "Man of God." Furthermore, Jesus was attributed as teaching (in the gospel of Matthew) that during the resurrection, those raised would be "as" (or like) the angels of God in heaven. This statement is further clarified by the similar passage found in Luke 20 which states, "for they (the resurrected) are angelic." This very idea of the spirits of human beings after death being resurrected, or possibly "raised up" (spiritually speaking) as the spirit messengers we call angels, is echoed somewhat by the teachings of famed medium, Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg called the spirits of dead humans, "angels," and claimed to visit with them often in the spirit world through trance states!

Today, many people look to angels for assistance or even intervention during crisis. A common modern-day description of angels are found in numerous stories of helpful, but mysterious strangers. These stories often tell of a person who seems to come to a person during a time of need, providing a word or help of some kind, then mysteriously disappearing quickly. During these experiences, the messenger or helper is indiscernable as an angel, but appears as a loving, caring human being. Similarly, spirits who come to comfort and lead dying people through the transition from this world unto the light (heaven, promised land, etc), are often described as angels, but are sometimes discovered to be deceased family members or friends of the one about to pass.

Thus, angels seem to have a very close association with humans, maybe even closer than we might think, when one examines biblical descriptions along with accounts of personal experiences. Summing up angels described within religion and within personal experiences as a whole, we know they are benevolant spirit beings that bring messages, aiding mankind; angels appear in human form; and angels have been described specifically as the spirits of humans within the spirit realm. Perhaps the term angels is a word to universally describe disembodied, yet enlightened spirits of humans, who help other human beings on both sides of the grave.
